Garth Ennis’ The Boys is a fantastic comic, one of the best being put out, but I’m not sure I agree with DC’s advertisement that it would “out-Preacher“ Preacher. Not because it’s a bad book — quite the opposite in fact — but because it belongs to an entirely different comics genre than Ennis’ Preacher. On the other hand, The Chronicles of Wormwood (again, by Ennis) falls into the exact same genre as Preacher (and Mark Millar’s Chosen, another cool comic). While it’s hard to judge a series by its first issue alone, it would seem that The Chronicles of Wormwood stands to possibly equal or even “out-Preacher” Preacher. The book is published by Avatar, but don’t let that fool you — it’s not because the quality isn’t high enough for Marvel, DC, or the other big guns to publish, it’s because of some sexual content and ideas about Christian beliefs that might offend some readers of the more mainstream publishers. And the art is significantly better than everything else I’ve ever seen from Avatar. So if you’re a fan of Garth Ennis or great books like Terry Pratchett’s and Neil Gaiman’s Good Omens, you owe it to yourself to check out The Chronicles of Wormwood.
