Restocking the Graphic Novels.

March 29, 2006

Our graphic novel selection is finally getting back to normal. The last couple of weeks have been big on graphic novel and trade paperback reorders. Stop in and check out the selection. Here are a few highlights:

ALIAS OMNIBUS
(Marvel) – a new release, but essential nontheless. This monster collects the entire run of Bendis’ ALIAS plus a couple of extra issues, including the WHAT IF…? issue. This was a really great series, and I was sorely disapointed to see it end. (PULSE was never as good.)

A COMPLETE LOWLIFE (Topshelf) – So you say you like Ed Brubaker’s writing on CAPTAIN AMERICA and DAREDEVIL? Well, did you know that he used to write and draw an indie comic called LOWLIFE? Betcha didn’t. This is a really good comic that is part fact, part fiction, and always humorous.

INFINITY WAR (Marvel) – Check out Marvel’s cosmic opus, featuring just about every Marvel character that’s worth a damn.

OMAC PROJECT (DC) – The best of the mini-series leading up to INFINITE CRISIS is back in stock in trade form. Make sure you get this one because the OMAC stuff isn’t going away anytime soon, and you’ll want to make sure you know what’s going on.

UNLIKELY (Top Shelf) – The first big Jeffrey Brown book might be the best. Guaranteed to make you laugh (and possibly cry).

Von’s Recommends…

March 24, 2006

Here are the two best books of the week (at least in my opinion).

DAREDEVIL #83 (Marvel) – Oh, Foggy how we will miss thee. Brubaker is pushing Matt Murdock beyond the point of no return and I’m lovin’ it. And who is this other Daredevil? I didn’t think it was possible to get better than Bendis’ run, but I think Brubaker may be doing just that.

SUPERMARKET #2 (IDW) – Brian Wood’s futuristic tale of Yakuza and… Swedish porn assassins? This is a fun ride and the art is fantastic. Better pick this one up while you can, because it’s been selling out fast.

Better hurry…

March 22, 2006

DC’s ONE YEAR LATER stories are flying off the shelf. We still have ROBIN #148 and SUPERGIRL & THE LEGION OF SUPERHEROES #16, but supplies are limited so you better hurry up. We also still have some DETECTIVE COMICS #816 left, as well as SUPERMAN #651.

Also, if you want to know exactly what’s going on when Marvel’s CIVIL WAR hits, you might want to considered picking up the last two issues of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN. But again, you better hurry because they’re flying off the shelves as we speak.

Seriously.

March 16, 2006

BATMAN: YEAR 100 (DC): Remember Dark Knight Returns and Batman: Year One? Remember how good they were? Well, Year 100 comes about as close as you can to being that good. Paul Pope is an amazing artist and with these books he’s proving to be an amazing writer as well. Batman is again dark, mysterious and dangerous. As a prestige format book it’s a little pricey ($5.99), but it’s well worth it.

GREEN ARROW #60 (DC): Where’s ol’ Ollie been for the past year? And why is Deadshot so happy about his new job? This issue mixes a little mystery with a little political intrigue. DC is taking some interesting direction with their bigger characters, and I suggest checking them out now while you still can.

ULTIMATE EXTINCTION #3 (Marvel): Wait…what? Since when was the Silver Surfer so awesome? Warren Ellis sure knows how to write good stories using mediocre characters. Be sure to check out the last leg of the Ultimate Galactus story arch.

Other sure bets:
CONAN: BOOK OF THOTH #1 (Dark Horse)
DMZ #5 (Vertigo)
GIRLS #11 (Image)
SEVEN SOLDIERS: BULLETEER #4 (DC)
SUPERMAN #650 (DC)
ULTIMATE X-MEN #68 (Marvel)
WALKING DEAD #26 (Image)

Von’s Recommends.

March 10, 2006

Hey kids, here are some books you might have looked over, but you should be reading:

LOCAL (Oni Press): Each issue is a self-containted story that takes place in a different city. People send writer Brian Wood pictures of their hometown and he uses them to draft a cool story. The art is great, too. Number four came in this past week and we sold out right away. Fortunately more are on their way, and we have the first three issues in stock as well.

DMZ (Vertigo): Another Brian Wood book. This one, though, is about a photo journalist that gets thrown into the midst of a new United States Civil War that’s centered in NYC. Another gem from Vertigo, I see this one going for one for a while and being as popular as Transmet or Y the Last Man. It’s up to issue four as of now and we have all of them in stock.

FELL (Image): Warren Ellis and Ben Templesmith team up to create on the best noir-crime books in years. Ellis’ knack for dialogue is a perfect match with Templesmith’s creepy art style. And what’s with the nun with the Nixon mask? Oh, and did I mention this book is a mere two bucks?!? We sold out of issue four in less than four hours, but more are on their way. You can pick up the first three issues now, though. DO IT!

AMERICAN VIRGIN (Veritgo): Weird title, even weirder concept. What happens when a young Christian evangelical who has been saving his virginity for marriage has his whole life turned upside down and chopped to little bits? With art by Becky Cloonan (DEMO), you know this is a hit. Recommended for fans of Y the Last Man.

Anything ULTIMATE (Marvel): You say you need a healthy does of superheroes? It’s not going to get better than the Ultimate line. See Hawkeye kill a room-full of bad guys with just his fingernails. See Ultimate Deadpool kick Spider-man’s ass. See the Hulk rip Wolverine in half! If you like superhero comics and you’re not reading the Ultimate stuff then there is something wrong with you. Seriously.

INFINITE CRISIS (DC): This is why the DCU is better than the Marvel Universe. Geoff Johns is laying waste to the DCU and you’re missing it! You better get on this now, because when the much-hyped 52 series kicks off in May, you’re going to cry about not knowing what’s going on. All issues in stock as we speak!

Back to normal operations.

March 5, 2006

Okay, so it’s been a while hasn’t it? I’m sorry. I really am. But we’ve been really busy getting the store back to normal, and the last thing I was thinking about was updating our little blog. But now that we are pretty much back to normal, I can now devote a little time to this thing. Expect regular updates, including shipping lists, recommendations, sale alerts, and much more. Again, sorry for the delay, but check back regularly for new updates starting this week.
